How to Get Started in Marketing During Troubled Times

For some time now, marketing has been heading, mostly, online. Covid has accelerated the process. Unfortunately, this seismic shift has put a lot of undue pressure on small to medium sized businesses; who are the worst hit by the pandemic.

Even if you are struggling, and on top of that have no idea how to market your business, there is hope.

Although I didn’t start in such apocalyptic times, when I got into marketing I had no idea what I was doing. I was a math nerd who started a business, and a family with two kids. I needed money. The only way to get it was to market hard, and grow my business-fast!

I still am a proud math nerd/dad; but now I am a proud math nerd/dad that can do online marketing.  I did it the hard way, so you don’t have to, read a 100 books and attended as many  conferences.

My point is no matter what your expertise, anyone can do online marketing.

So, how does an advisor get started?

Well, when you are thinking about email marketing, like with any content, you need to follow the 80/20 rule.

80% Content- Any video, text you produce to grow your business but doesn’t do so explicitly.

20% Sales Pitch- Selling your product/service explicitly.

Valuable Content → Sales→ Success

Another thing to realize is that whether you are a math nerd or plan advisor, everybody needs to be a publisher. It needs to fulfill a concrete need and be consistent.

Publish at least once a week, avoid corporate language, sound human and don’t be afraid of expressing a point of view.
