And this needs change.<\/p>\n<p>Financial professionals have to consider the risk associated with alternative strategies, particularly the unregistered versions that are still limited to wealthy investors. They need to be extremely careful when looking at alternative investments and the client has to fit a certain profile.<\/p>\n<p>Another problem is that alternative investments are not for the average American investor, and even if they do make sense, people have to be wary during times of volatility.<\/p>\n<p>Now, most alternatives are the privilege of institutions and wealthy individuals, but these restrictions could soon be lifted.<\/p>\n<p>Most professionals believe the Securities and Exchange Commission\u2019s definition of accredited investor should be updated because it is prohibitively high.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong><a id=\"liquid-diversification\"><\/a>Liquid Diversification<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To <a href=\"https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/case-studyoptions-can-help-to-diversify-risk\/\">diversify a funds allocation<\/a> advisors should take note of liquid alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>The key to allocating funds comprised of alternative strategies is knowing what to expect and understanding the investment options.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With stocks and bonds correlating in a move toward the floor, retail investors have been\u00a0rediscovering the benefits of diversifying into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investmentnews.com\/finra-tells-firms-to-step-up-oversight-of-sales-of-liquid-alts-220468\">mutual funds and ETFs that employ alternative<\/a>\u00a0strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Even though financial advisors, in general, continue to express mixed views about the broad category of so-called liquid alternative funds, proof of the trend can be found in the flow of investor dollars.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong><a id=\"bullish-on-liquid-alt-funds\"><\/a>Bullish on Liquid Alt Funds<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Looking at some of the standout performances by funds making up the broadly diverse liquid alts universe,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.morningstar.com\/articles\/1099636\/alternatives-finally-bear-fruit-but-take-care\">Morningstar senior analyst Bobby Blue<\/a>\u00a0suspects there\u2019s \u201ca bit of performance-chasing going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, he considers that some of the strategy types have proven themselves to be effective diversifiers.<\/p>\n<p>Blue cited equity market neutral which goes long and short across a range of asset classes, and systematic trends like managed futures as some of the stronger liquid alt strategies this year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10004 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1102\" height=\"730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img2.jpg 1102w, https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img2-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img2-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img2-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img2-500x331.jpg 500w, https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img2-800x530.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1102px) 100vw, 1102px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the S&amp;P 500 Index hovering over a bear market, any glimmer of hope is welcome. So it\u2019s no surprise investors have their eye on the best performing liquid alt funds.<\/p>\n<p>And, according to Blue, \u201cit\u2019s absolutely still a good time to invest in this category.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong><a id=\"strategic-allocation\"><\/a>Strategic Allocation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, to invest in liquid alt funds clients need to understand their structure and to work on strategy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese strategies can diversify away from stocks and bonds, and that\u2019s not something you want to try and time,\u201d Blue said. \u201cYou need to carve out a strategic allocation for alternatives and understand the role they can play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On that note, Paul Schatz, president of Heritage Capital, agrees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiquid alts has become that catchall phrase for allowing the public access to previously hedge-fund-only strategies,\u201d he said. \u201cThey are intended to offer non-correlated funds and be all-weather, but I haven\u2019t seen a consistent definition or how to properly categorize them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tim Holsworth, president of AHP Financial, is also sitting this one out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had lots of experience and therefore I don\u2019t use them, because I\u2019ve never seen anybody that could successfully pull it off,\u201d he said. \u201cGenerally speaking, it\u2019s safe to say the industry has a helluva time playing the shorts successfully because there\u2019s a major long bias in the markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Ashton Lawrence, a partner at Goldfinch Wealth Management, continues to be a believer in the diversifying benefits of alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10005 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1168\" height=\"717\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img3.jpg 1168w, https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img3-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img3-1024x629.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img3-768x471.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img3-500x307.jpg 500w, https:\/\/rixtrema.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/img3-800x491.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1168px) 100vw, 1168px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe utilize some alternative investments as bond proxies since their volatility, fluctuations and standard deviation are similar to some bond funds,\u201d he said. \u201cConversely, we utilize some alternative investments as a diversifier to the equity holdings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Here, at RiXtrema, we help financial professionals improve their clients\u2019 portfolios by carving out a thoughtful, appropriately sized position for each fund that fits the client\u2019s risk tolerance and risk capacity.
